🌊 Nakalele Blowhole
Start on the eastern edge of the north side of the island at Nakalele Blowhole. Park in the small roadside pull-off and walk down for geyser-like eruptions as waves crash onshore. The view from high ground is excellent — no need to go near the water.
⚠️ Stay on high ground — people have been killed by waves here. View from a safe distance only. Best during high tide — check the tide report before heading up
Alternative — if not high tide
🪨 Makaluapuna Point (Dragon's Teeth)
If the tide isn't right for the blowhole, head to Makaluapuna Point instead. Jagged lava formations jut up like dragon teeth along the coastline, plus a prayer labyrinth. Park at the end of Office Road by the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.

10:30 AM
🥞 Breakfast at The Gazebo
Drive back from Nakalele and stop at The Gazebo in Napili for one of Maui's most beloved breakfasts. Mac nut pancakes, omelets, eggs benedict, fried rice — the menu is excellent across the board. Expect a wait, but it lives up to the hype.
Parking on north side of Napili Shores Hotel on Napili Place — or street parking nearby Alt: Hawaiian Village Coffee — bagels & donuts if the wait is too long
11:00 AM
2:00 PM
🐢 Napili Bay
Walk straight from The Gazebo to one of West Maui's finest beaches. Napili Bay is mostly protected, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and spotting Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu). Bring snacks, an umbrella, and snorkel gear — plan to stay a while.
Shower facilities near the boardwalk (shared with adjacent hotels) No public restrooms on-site — nearest at Kapalua Bay next door No lifeguards — check conditions before entering the water

🏔️ ʻĪao Valley State Park
A short but rewarding detour on the way back toward central Maui. ʻĪao Valley is a lush, dramatic gorge in the West Maui Mountains — a quick walk leads to beautiful views of the Kūkaʻilimoku needle and the valley walls. It's also the site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai, where Kamehameha I conquered the Maui army and unified the islands.
Parking $10/car · Entrance $5/person Short walk — plan 30–45 minutes total Located near Wailuku — easy stop on the drive back from West Maui
3:30 PM
4:30 PM
🏘️ Explore Wailuku
Right next door to ʻĪao Valley, Wailuku is Maui's county seat and a charming commercial town worth a wander. Off-the-beaten-path mom and pop shops and restaurants line the streets — a welcome contrast to the resort areas. Head to North Market Street for Wailuku Coffee Company, local clothing stores, the historic ʻĪao Theater, and more.
Pair naturally with ʻĪao Valley — both are in the same neighborhood
🗺️ Map → 🧳 Packing List →
  • Nakalele tide timing: The blowhole is most dramatic at high tide — check a tide chart before heading north and plan the morning accordingly
  • Safety at Nakalele: Stay on high ground at all times. The rocks below are extremely dangerous — people have been swept in and killed. The view from above is genuinely impressive; there's no reason to go closer to the water
  • Dragon's Teeth (Makaluapuna Point) is always worth a stop regardless of tide — great coastal views and the lava formations are striking
  • The Gazebo is cash-only — bring cash or check current policy before you go
  • Napili Bay has no lifeguards — check ocean conditions before getting in the water
  • ʻĪao Valley is a quick stop — 30–45 minutes is plenty. Bring $10 cash for parking and $5/person for entry
