August 2026
Saturday
Before You Leave the Villa
No car needed today — everything is walkable along the Ka'anapali boardwalk or a free trolley ride away. Leave the keys on the counter.
Head to Black Rock early — snorkeling is best before 11:00 AM. Sea turtles are most active in the morning and conditions deteriorate as the wind picks up.
Pack beach snacks from the villa before heading out — fruit, granola bars, coconut water. The whole day runs on one beach bag.
Roy's closes at 8:00 PM — plan to arrive by 7:00 PM and order the chocolate soufflé the moment you sit down (it takes 20 minutes to prepare).
If you're doing the sunset catamaran sail (~5:00–7:00 PM), bring your booking confirmation and plan to skip the boardwalk sunset walk that evening.
Day Warnings
Black Rock is not lifeguarded — the lava drop-off can have strong currents and surge. Check hioceansafety.com before entering. Watch for cliff jumpers above your entry point on the south side of the rock. When in doubt, don't go out.
Reef-safe sunscreen is legally required in Hawaii — no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Check your label before you pack it. Non-compliant sunscreen can be confiscated at some locations.
Roy's is a proper restaurant — smart casual dress required. Don't arrive in beach gear. Pack a dinner outfit separately so you can change at the villa before heading over.
Day-specific item
Standard / always-pack item
🤿Snorkel Gear — Black Rock
Snorkel mask & fins essential
Bring your own for best fit, or rent from the Sheraton beach concession right at Black Rock (~$15–25/set). A well-fitting mask makes a big difference — rental masks can leak.
Underwater camera or GoPro
Black Rock is one of Maui's best snorkel spots — sea turtles, reef fish, and the dramatic lava drop-off. Waterproof housing or a GoPro is well worth it for this one.
Rash guard or UV swim shirt optional
Extended time in the water at Black Rock — the lava rock reflects a lot of sun. A rash guard provides full-day UV protection without relying on sunscreen reapplication while swimming.
Waterproof phone pouch optional
For taking your phone into shallow water or keeping it dry on the beach. Alternatively, leave valuables in your beach bag while snorkeling.
Mask defogger / no-fog solution
Keeps the mask clear at Black Rock — turtle and reef-fish viewing is the highlight here.
🏖️Beach & Pool
Towels essential
Bring at least one per person — you'll use them at Black Rock after snorkeling, then again at the Westin Nanea pool in the afternoon. The resort may have pool towels, but beach towels are yours to keep dry.
Beach bag essential
The whole day runs out of one bag — towels, sunscreen, snacks, water, camera. A tote or backpack that can get a little sandy and wet.
Reef-safe sunscreen essential
Legally required in Hawaii — no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Full day of beach, snorkeling, and pool. Apply before leaving the villa and reapply every 2 hours. Bring enough for the full group.
Hat or cap
Full day on the beach and boardwalk with minimal shade. The afternoon pool time and evening boardwalk walk both benefit from a hat during daylight hours.
Sunglasses
All-day sun on the water and boardwalk. Essential for the sunset ceremony walk — you'll be looking west directly into the sun as it drops.
Flip flops / sandals
The boardwalk, beach, and Whalers Village are all sandal-friendly. You'll be on your feet a lot — bring comfortable sandals you can walk in.
Beach snacks from the villa
Pack before you leave — fruit, granola bars, coconut water. You'll be at the beach from mid-morning through early afternoon. Easier than buying food on the boardwalk mid-morning.
Reusable water bottles
Full day in tropical heat — between snorkeling, walking the boardwalk, and the pool, you'll drink more than you expect. Fill up at the villa before leaving.
Beach cover-up
To throw over swimwear for the walk from Black Rock to lunch at Whalers Village.
🪂Optional Activities
Parasailing reservation confirmation optional
UFO Parasail on Ka'anapali Beach — ~$80–100/person, ~1.5 hours total. Check-in is on the beach, no driving needed. Have booking confirmation on your phone.
Sunset catamaran confirmation optional
Teralani or Trilogy sail departs Ka'anapali Beach ~5:00–7:00 PM (~$100–130/person). If booked, this replaces the boardwalk sunset walk. Bring the confirmation on your phone.
Credit card for gear rentals & activities
Snorkel gear at the Sheraton (~$15–25/set), any activity upgrades, Whalers Village shopping. Most vendors on the beach accept card.
Cash for tips & small purchases cash
Tips for parasail or catamaran crew, shave ice at Island Vintage Coffee in Whalers Village, small vendor purchases along the boardwalk.
🍽️Evening — Roy's Ka'anapali
Smart casual dinner outfit essential
Roy's is a proper sit-down restaurant — don't arrive in beach clothes. Pack a dinner outfit you can change into at the villa before heading over. A nice shirt and shorts or a sundress is fine.
Roy's reservation confirmation
(808) 669-6999 · 2290 Ka'anapali Pkwy · Closes 8:00 PM — arrive by 7:00 PM. Remember: order the chocolate soufflé first. It takes 20 minutes.

Restaurants in Ka'anapali are often over-air-conditioned. A light cardigan or linen shirt over your dinner outfit is worth packing.
