Before You Leave
~25 minute drive from the Westin Nanea — no early rush. Aim to leave by 8:30 AM to make breakfast at Kihei Caffe before the Cannery Mall opens.
Park once, stay all day — the Lahaina Cannery Mall lot is free and central to everything: Kihei Caffe, the mall, the oceanside restaurant row, and Baby Beach are all walkable or a short drive from there.
Have your Aloha Mixed Plate reservation confirmation ready — it's the busiest lunch spot in the area and the outdoor oceanfront seating fills up fast.
Mala Ocean Tavern reservations: (808) 667-9394. It's open-air and oceanfront — plan to arrive around 7:00 PM. Walk-in seating is usually available but reservations are safer.
Lahaina — Important Reminders
Downtown Front Street is CLOSED — it's an active construction zone. Orange bollards mark the no-entry boundary. Do not attempt to enter the restricted area under any circumstances.
Be respectful — Lahaina is still a community in recovery. Avoid photographing burned lots, damaged buildings, or empty areas. The open areas are welcoming visitors; the closed areas are not.
Some roads near Baby Beach may have temporary closures due to ongoing rebuilding. Enter via the north side near Mala Ramp and follow posted signage if redirected.
Reef-safe sunscreen legally required — no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Baby Beach is a reef-protected cove.
Day-specific item
Standard / always-pack item
🏖️Beach — Baby Beach Lahaina
Swim wear essential
Baby Beach is a calm reef-protected cove — good for swimming and snorkeling. Wear it under your clothes in the morning so you can head straight to the beach after the mall.
Towel essential
One per person — Baby Beach has no facilities. Bring from the resort.
Snorkel mask & fins optional
Baby Beach has a protected reef — decent snorkeling in calm conditions. Bring your own or pick up gear at Boss Frog's Snorkel Shop inside the Cannery Mall before heading to the beach.
Reef-safe sunscreen essential
Legally required in Hawaii — no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Full day of sun between the beach, the boardwalk, and the outdoor restaurant row. Apply before the beach and reapply throughout the day.
River shoes
Baby Beach has a rocky entry on the north side near Mala Ramp. River shoes make entry and exit more comfortable than bare feet.
Mask defogger / no-fog solution optional
For the Baby Beach snorkel — keeps the mask clear in the calm reef cove.
Cover-up / quick change
To throw over swimwear for lunch at Aloha Mixed Plate after the beach.
Wet bag for swimsuit / towel
Keep wet beach gear separate during the afternoon shopping and dinner.
Beach bag
To carry your towel, sunscreen, and snorkel gear to and from the car. You'll keep this in the car while shopping and bring it out for the beach section of the day.
🛍️Town Day Essentials
Hat or cap
Full day of outdoor walking — Cannery Mall lot, Baby Beach, the open-air restaurant row, and Lahaina Gateway are all exposed. West Maui sun is direct in August.
Sunglasses
Between the beach, the oceanside restaurant row, and the drive along the coast, you'll have the sun in your eyes for most of the day.
Reusable water bottle
Fill up at the resort before leaving. Lahaina gets hot and you'll be walking a fair amount between stops. Refill at any restaurant along the way.
Comfortable walking shoes or sandals
Shopping, the restaurant row walk, and Baby Beach involve a full day on your feet. Save the flip flops for the beach — wear walking sandals or shoes for the town portion.
Tote bag for shopping optional
Cannery Mall has Hawaiian Island Creations, Lahaina Jewelers, Local Motion, and Lahaina Printsellers — easy to accumulate bags. A reusable tote keeps purchases tidy.
Cash for small purchases & tips cash
Art show vendors in the Cannery Mall parking lot, tips at Aloha Mixed Plate and Mala, and any roadside or small vendor stops. Bring a reasonable amount — most shops take card but vendors may not.
Credit card
For shopping at the Cannery Mall and Lahaina Gateway, restaurant meals, and any activity add-ons (Lahaina Harbor snorkel tours, sunset sail).
🌊Dinner — Mala Ocean Tavern
Smart casual outfit essential
Mala is open-air oceanfront but it's a proper sit-down restaurant. A nice shirt and shorts or a sundress is perfect — just don't show up in wet beach gear. You'll have time to freshen up at the car before dinner.
Reservation confirmation
Mala Ocean Tavern · 1307 Front St, Lahaina · (808) 667-9394 · Open 4:00–9:00 PM · Walk-in seating available but reservations are safer in summer.
Light layer for dinner optional
Mala is open-air so no AC chill — but the ocean breeze at 7 PM in Lahaina can be cooler than expected. A light linen shirt or cardigan is worth tossing in the car.
📱Standard Gear
Phone + offline maps
Download offline maps for the Lahaina area — some side roads near Baby Beach may be closed and detours aren't always well signed. Also useful for restaurant navigation and reservation lookup.
Camera
The oceanside restaurant row, Coco Deck sunset, and Baby Beach are all worth photographing. Be mindful around the restricted areas — no photos of burned or damaged property.
Portable charger / power bank
Full day out from ~8:30 AM to ~9:00 PM. Maps, photos, and restaurant confirmations will run down your phone. Charge it overnight and bring it along.
Photo ID
For restaurant reservations and any activity check-ins at Lahaina Harbor.
Lip balm with SPF
Full day of West Maui sun — beach, boardwalk, open-air restaurant row.
Hair ties
For the Baby Beach snorkel and breezy oceanfront.
Deodorant / freshen-up kit (in car)
Beach → afternoon shopping → 7 PM dinner at Mala. Quick freshen-up at the car before dinner.
