Before You Leave
Light breakfast before 8:00 AM — quick yogurt bowls at the villa. Nothing is available at the helipad. Depart the villa by ~7:15 AM for the Kahului heliport.
Wear dark clothing — Blue Hawaiian specifically requests dark colors to minimize photo reflections in the cockpit glass during the helicopter flight. Light colors or white show up in every photo.
Kula Bistro takeout at ~2:30 PM — 4566 Lower Kula Rd, Kula. Pick up dinner here before heading to Kula Marketplace. Bring enough food and beverages for a long cold evening at the summit.
Meet guide at Kula Marketplace at 3:00 PM — 15200 Haleakalā Hwy. Arrive by 2:45 PM. Maui Stargazing · Booking #331903967.
Charge your phone and power bank overnight — this is a full 14+ hour day from before sunrise to near 10 PM.
Day Warnings
Haleakalā summit is genuinely cold — temperatures at the 10,000-ft summit can drop below freezing after dark. Maui Stargazing provides snowboarding pants, a winter coat, hat, and gloves — but you must wear your own warm base layers underneath. Don't underpack this.
No tablets or extended-lens cameras during the helicopter flight — Blue Hawaiian policy. Standard phones and compact cameras are fine. Leave large gear in the car.
Motion sickness on the road up Haleakalā — the drive is steep and very winding. Take Meclizine or similar before the Kula Marketplace meetup, not after you're already in the van feeling ill.
Drive down in the dark — the road off Haleakalā after the tour is winding with no streetlights and cattle on the road. Go slowly. Don't be in a hurry.
Day-specific item
Standard / always-pack item
🚁Helicopter — Blue Hawaiian
Dark-colored clothing essential
Blue Hawaiian's policy — dark tops and bottoms reduce cockpit-glass reflections in photos. No white, light gray, or bright colors. Wear what you'll have on for the whole day.
Booking confirmation on phone essential
Blue Hawaiian Helicopters · Booking #336456268 · 1 Lelepio Pl, Kahului · Arrive ~8:15 AM for an 8:30 AM flight.
Compact camera or phone only optional
No tablets or extended-lens cameras allowed during the flight. A phone or GoPro is ideal. Leave DSLRs with large lenses in the car — they aren't permitted.
🌿O'o Farm — Lunch Tour
Sturdy closed-toe shoes essential
The farm walk is on dirt paths and uneven ground at 3,500 ft. No sandals or flip flops — wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy.
Light jacket or layer essential
Upcountry Kula is cool and often misty at 3,500 ft — noticeably different from the coast. You'll be walking outdoors for 30–45 minutes before sitting down to lunch. Bring a layer you can tie around your waist.
O'o Farm booking confirmation
Waipoli Rd, Kula · 10:30 AM tour · $155/adult, $77.50/child · (808) 667-4341 · Confirm your reservation details in advance.
🍽️Kula Bistro — Summit Picnic Dinner
Cooler essential
Bring a cooler to keep the Kula Bistro takeout warm on the drive up to the summit. The food sits for 30–45 minutes before you eat — an insulated cooler keeps everything at a good temperature at 10,000 ft.
Food containers or bag for takeout essential
Pick up at Kula Bistro (~2:30 PM) and carry up to the summit. Pack everything into the cooler for the drive. The summit is cold — insulated containers help keep food warm through the picnic.
Beverages for the summit picnic
Pack enough drinks for 4–5 hours at the summit. Warm drinks in an insulated bottle are welcome — it gets very cold after sunset. Water for the drive up as well.
Cash cash
For the Kula Bistro takeout order and any tip. Confirm if they accept cards before heading over.
Haleakalā & Stargazing
Warm base layers — long pants essential
Maui Stargazing provides the outer shell (snowboarding pants, coat, hat, gloves) but you wear your own base layers underneath. Thin pants alone won't be enough — wear warm long pants you'll have on from the start of the day.
Warm base layers — long sleeve shirt + hoodie essential
The guide explicitly recommends: long sleeve shirt + hoodie or sweatshirt under the provided coat. The summit can be near freezing — the more layers under the shell, the better.
Thick socks essential
Cold seeps in from the ground when you're standing still for 90 minutes. Thick wool or thermal socks make a significant difference.
Maui Stargazing booking confirmation
Booking #331903967 · Meet at Kula Marketplace, 15200 Haleakalā Hwy · Arrive by 2:45 PM for a 3:00 PM departure.
Motion sickness medication optional
The road up Haleakalā is steep, winding, and long. Take it before the Kula Marketplace meetup. If you wait until you're in the van, it's too late.
Sunscreen & hat for pre-sunset essential
UV exposure at 10,023 ft is intense before dark. The summit is above most of the atmosphere's UV protection. Apply sunscreen and wear a hat during the sunset portion — even with cool temperatures.
Red-light flashlight / headlamp essential
Preserves night vision at the dark summit and lets you move safely. A red-light mode is ideal for stargazing — white light ruins everyone's adjusted eyes.
Hand & foot warmers (disposable)
90 minutes standing still near freezing — disposable warmers in gloves and shoes make a big difference. The tour provides gloves but not warmers.
Thin liner gloves / backup beanie
The tour provides a hat and gloves, but thin liner gloves let you operate a camera/phone without bare hands. A backup beanie is cheap insurance.
Blanket / sit pad for the picnic
For the summit sunset dinner — sitting on cold ground. A blanket also adds warmth during the stargazing.
📷Gear & Tech
Camera + tripod optional
Tonight is a new moon — absolute darkest sky possible. Tripods and cameras are welcome at the summit. Long-exposure shots of the Milky Way are genuinely achievable. This is a once-in-a-trip opportunity.
Portable charger / power bank essential
14+ hour day — helicopter at 8:30 AM, summit return around 10 PM. Charge overnight. The cold at the summit also drains phone batteries faster than normal.
Reusable water bottle
Stay hydrated throughout the day — from the early morning departure through the summit. Fill up before leaving the villa.
Photo ID & credit card
For the helicopter check-in, farm tour, and Kula Bistro. Keep them accessible — you'll use them at multiple stops.
Sunglasses essential
Bright helicopter flight in the morning and intense pre-sunset UV at the summit.
Lip balm with SPF
Dry, cold summit air plus high-altitude sun — your lips will take a beating.
Personal medications
Hand sanitizer / wet wipes
For the farm visit and the summit picnic dinner.
